Purpose: Write and illustrate step-by-step instructions for making an object out of one sheet of 8 1/2 by 11 inch paper, preferably with no cutting or tearing required.
Audience: Children, 8-10 year olds
- Define object to be produced in title.
- Use simple language.
- Provide multiple, brief step-by-step instructions.
- Illustrate the steps.
Suggestions for objects: airplane, cup, “fortune-teller,” football, note, crane, etc.
Evaluation: Classmate, substituting for the target audience, will attempt to make the object. If he/she is successful, the author will be given full credit. If classmate is not successful, the author will clarify the instructions and ask classmate to try again.
Group work connection: Assignment could be turned into a team-based assignment, with teams of students writing instructions and then attempting to complete instruction sets done by classmates.
